INTRODUCTION TO IMPOUNDING
Vehicle impounding is the process of law enforcement agencies removing vehicles and placing them in their respective LEA impounded vehicle storages. Vehicle impounding typically takes place after a driver commits traffic related violations.
IMPOUNDABLE VIOLATIONS
SA-PSC § VII.8. Illegal Parking [IF] - vehicles must be parked in a way which does not obstruct access to buildings, roads, sidewalks and driveways. Vehicles that park on the road may park with two wheels on the sidewalk, but in a way that lets the sidewalk remain accessible. Government buildings have a right to enforce parking bans near their premises. Vehicles may be impounded for up to three hours for this.
SA-PSC § VII.15. Usage of neons [IF] - if a driver has red and blue neon lights on their car, similar to a police car, impound their car and notify them to remove the neon lights. Vehicles may be impounded for a time period decided by the officer, depending on the severity.
SA-PSC § VII.3. Reckless Driving [IF] - drivers who drive in a dangerous way may have their vehicle impounded if the offense has been repeated or the driving resulted in injury/damage to the public. Vehicles to be impounded for three to five hours, depending on the severity.
SA-PSC § VII.5. Obligation to give precedence to emergency vehicles. [IF] - drivers should yield to emergency units that are responding with a Code 3. If not, they risk having their vehicle towed and impounded, on top of a fine.
SA-PSC § VII.10. Driving under the influence [M] - drunk/drug drivers will have their vehicle impounded for a period up to the officer's discrection.
SA-PSC § VII.16. Driving without lights [IF] - between 18:00 and 08:00, and in bad weather conditions, drivers need to have their headlamps turned on, or their vehicle may be impounded for one hour.
SA-PSC § VII.17. Driving under distraction [IF] - any activity done that hinders the driver's operation of their car such as phone usage, eating and drinking, may result in vehicle impounding.
SA-PSC § VII.18. Repetitive offenders - those liable of three traffic offenses in three days should have their vehicle impounded for one day. If they commit another traffic offence within three days of their vehicle being released, impound their vehicle for three days.
